AS Film Evaluation

For my AS film studies coursework we had to make a short film based on a sequence from a feature length film. The area/job in my film which I decided to work on was sound technician I chose the job of sound technician because; in my opinion sound tends to set the mood for most scenes be that it in the case of theme music or be that in the case of diegetic sound e.g. footsteps or creaking doors.
The Genre which my short film would be put in would be a post-apocalyptic action. The films which influenced my work were 28 Weeks Later (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo 2007). He influenced my work because, I liked the running scene in 28 Weeks Later when Don was running away from the ‘infected’ because, it showed both highly effective camerawork and good use of diegetic and non diegetic sound when Don is escaping and Running.
We also used a lot of close up shots on the face to show the tension being built up in our film, with using a lot of close up shots we hoped that the audience would feel on edge and have that feeling ‘what will happen next’ or ‘is there anyone there’

As the Sound technician the Sub genre has influenced my decision in the creation of the soundtrack to my short film I knew it had to be upbeat and not slow and romantic because, in apocalyptic films the music/soundtrack chosen tends to be fast and upbeat to emphasise the tension going on in the scene/shot. The genre of my work influenced me in the way that we decided to have no dialogue what so ever in the hoping that it would grip the audiences attention into feeling more insecure and to into feeling more isolated and finally making them feel like they could relate with this character in his situation.

The way in which I worked with other groups members to develop Genre, character and Narrative was that we got to choose who we were with inside our group and then with the people who were in our group we chose what jobs we were going to do and we agreed on the genre and place we were going to film it. After that we all decided to pitch in ideas for our storyline and Sean and I decided to write/plan the storyline with our group’s ideas as the backbone to it. We also decided whilst one person uses the camera the other two people would have to help out by acting out the sequence so it could be filmed. We were always constantly developing our film due to the extra input made by the group. For example, we ended up changing the characters personality quite a few times until we found the perfect personality which would fit the character in our film.

I wanted the audience to respond to the soundtrack I created for my short film in the way that they could relate to the character and in theory become the character. For example in the scene when the main character is seen running back or running away from the zombies/infected we wanted the audience to feel like they themselves were involved in the scene. I also wanted the audience to respond with emotion and feeling throughout the entire short film.

The responses and feedback I managed to get showed that the video was an overall success throughout all micro aspects of it be that in my micro aspect of sound or in the micro aspect of cinematography/camerawork. But there were some problems involved during the filming process e.g. the first we filmed our film we realised that most of it was rubbish in a sense that the camerawork was all jittery and there were too many people passing by so, when it came down to editing the film we had to completely re-film it. Apart from that we did not have any other problems whilst producing our film. Another great success from my job of being the sound editor was that the film music was entirely composed on a computer keyboard by pressing down keys to create sounds and it was not created using pre recorded tracks.

I think that my technical skill has given me an advantage when it came down to composing my work especially when I was composing onto the computers using the keyboard, I wouldn’t say that my technical skills hindered my ability to make creative choices, I would probably say they did the opposite and my technical skills gave me more options when it came down to composing my music for the short film.

Below are some pictures which I used as either for inspiration or they were actual screen shots of my micro aspect.
